Sesame is one of the hardiest of all crops that man has cultivated for the last many thousands of years. It is called a survivor seed as it can grow in even severe drought conditions. It is believed that when we eat it, we not only benefit from its nutrition but also its qualities of resilience. This is probably why Ayurvedic wisdom suggests that sesame is very strength giving and it is a Rasayana ie a tonic for the system that has the power to rejuvenate all tissues. The fall and winter is great time to use sesame. It could either be eaten raw, as Tahini, or even can be sprinkled in our bread or meals.
